Associated Press Managing Editor award goes to Age of Uncertainty!

Yes, this news is a bit old, but I am excited nonetheless! The Roanoke Times and Roanoke.com received APME’s Online Convergence award for the 40,000- to 150,000-circulation category for our in-depth coverage focusing on the challenges facing the region’s rapidly growing elderly population. Here are the comments from the judges:

“In ‘Age of Uncertainty,’ The Times presents its community with a compelling look at the challenges it faces in caring for a disproportionately large aging population. In the paper and in its video segments, the issues are vividly explored through the lives of area residents who are coping with elderly care, including illnesses as grave as dementia. The paper’s demographic database on the Virginia’s elderly, presented in a slick interactive map, speaks to the sophistication of the series and nicely complemented the storytelling that truly won the day.”

Congrats to everyone involved! If you have not explored the site yet, I encourage you to do so. Beth Macy’s stories, Josh Meltzer’s videos and Matt Chittum and my geographic aging map are all the result of a lot of hard work that I believe paid off!

On that note, we just launched our next part in the Aging series. Check out the latest story on a woman struggling to care for her husband who suffered from a brain aneurysm. Again, Meltzer’s video demonstrates top-notch visual journalism. Let me know what you think of our latest addition!
