Great reads straight from the Information Science classroom

I feel like all I have been doing lately is reading for class, but the good thing is that I can pass along the “worthy” literature on to you! I’ll start doing this on a regular basis by providing you all with inspiration reads that I come across in my classes. We all know that reading and browsing other multimedia work are two necessities to staying on top of the industry, so I encourage you all to forgo a TV show this week to read one of these great articles.

1) Web Style Guide, 2nd Edition conveniently put all of their chapters online, and they are a definite must-read. With chapters on site, interface and page design, as well as typography, graphics and multimedia, this book has something for everyone.

For my Info Tools class, I read the chapter on interface design. I also saw that they had a chapter on multimedia, so I read that as well. Both are exceptionally good and thorough, so take a look at the different chapters and start with one that you are interesting in learning more about.

2) I am also reading O’Reilly’s book “Web Design in a Nutshell” for this class and have been thoroughly satisfied. In reading it, I have taught myself HTML, CSS, Java, and so much more. If you have leftover money from Christmas, make sure to pick up this one.

3) For my Human-Information Interaction class, I was asked to read “Information Seeking on the Web: An Integrated Model of Browsing and Searching,” an article on the peer-review site First Monday. Even though it studies how humans search the Web in a more broad manner, I saw many parallels to multimedia and journalism sites. Definitely glance at this one!

  1. Thanks for these links. The web style guide book, online, is nice to know about.
