University of Miami students promo projects on VisualJournalism blog

University of Miami graduate student Andrea Ballocchi Coudeu posted a link on Facebook to a blog, VisualJournalism, that features projects by the school’s visual journalism students. Maintained by Kim Grinfeder, this is a great resource to promote students’ work, as well as to educate professionals about Miami’s visual program. I wish every Journalism school was utilizing Twitter, blogs and Facebook groups to promote their class projects …

Former UNC professor Rich Beckman recently moved to Miami to serve as the Knight Chair of Visual Journalism. I previously covered Beckman’s feat to document the Special Olympics World Games with 50 students from Miami and UNC. I have been eager to see what else he will do with the program there, so I am excited to see that this blog will keep me up-to-date.

Currently, there are only around 10 multimedia projects, videos and audio slide shows featured on the site, but if it is well maintained this could be a great blog to keep tabs on these talented students.

After viewing the projects, the biggest thing I think they need to work on right now is their design skills. The content is rich, but the design and UI for each is a little clunky. But, as students are continually learning, I will be eager to see if their design and programming skills develop to result in more sophisticated packages.

I would encourage these students to allow comments on the site, as the only way to learn and improve is to receive feedback and critiques from others in the industry.

For more information on Miami’s visual journalism program, peruse the site and watch their promo video.

  1. yes, this is great!

Last year me and some classmates created a social network site for journalism students of our school in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

It’s a great idea to have a common place for students and teachers to get in contact with each other, and their work. People are free to upload anything they like, photo’s, video’s, stories. They got commented a lot. About the quality, the ethics, etc.

Next to that it’s a great place to have discussions about the future of journalism, in the real world, and in the school.

Last great thing is that people actually start to know each other again. Online conversation lead to offline. There are parties, discussion forums, etc.

You can check it out at http://www.humedia.nl , maybe give it a try with google translate :)
