Advice & inspiration

Recession-proof highlights for multimedia enthusiasts

Are you in the blues from all of this bad news lately? Today has been a day full of pleasant surprises for me, with links to free tutorials, blog entries full of invaluable advice, and even a new multimedia company on the horizon! Dig into all of this great stuff and feel the excitement … there are good times ahead of us, folks!

Hopefully you know by now that MediaStorm is offering a FREE week-long advanced reporting workshop as a part of their multimedia stimulus plan. Applications are due this Friday, so hurry up and apply!

MediaStorm’s Eric Maierson has also posted two insightful entries about multimedia tips on everything from production techniques to equipment choices. Make sure to read these if you haven’t had the time to yet:

Advice to Multimedia Producers

Another great site I stumbled across was Multimedia in Minutes, a “video tutorial web site for busy journalists and students dedicated to the craft of multimedia journalism.” They also had a great weekly round-up of multimedia projects on their blog, but it looks like that was short-lived. Maybe we can kindly pressure them to keep it going, as I was excited to see some unfamiliar projects in the first two posts …

Richard Koci Hernandez of MultimediaShooter notified me about Story4, a new multimedia company, of which he is a contributor. According to their site, Story4 will “provide video and Web 2.0 content for nonprofits, foundations and media organizations.” How exciting! This is another company to provide multimedia content for a variety of clients, alongside MediaStorm, Bombay Flying Club, and 49th parallel productions, among others.

Here are some new great blogs I came across that I would recommend for everyone:
Wire&Lights by Matt Ford, Interactive Producer at AP
New Media Mind by Jen Reeves, New Media Director at KOMU-TV and Associate Professor at the Missouri School of Journalism
Cujo’s Byte by Steven King, Editor of Innovations at Washington Post
an information design blog by Nick Rapp, Art Director for the Associated Press Interactive Design & Graphics Department
and a multimedia blog by Adam Westbrook, broadcast journalist at Bauer Media

Hopefully everyone found something new and interesting from this round-up. I’m glad to see our industry become more innovative and energetic as the times get tough. It’s inspirational to see all of the work that others are doing!

Thanks so much for the kind words about my blog! I’m headed into a new chapter of my time at KOMU-TV, I would love more insight and thoughts as I try new ideas in my newsroom!
