Washington Post launches interactive video and comments feature

Washington Post's 'Scene In'

Washington Post’s ‘Scene In’

The Washington Post recently launched an interactive video feature titled, “Scene In.” Produced with a Canon 5D Mark II by talented videographer Alexandra Garcia, this weekly fashion video package features a variety of innovative elements, including interactive video controls and an animated comments section.

The quality of the videos is exceptional, thanks to the now famous Mark camera. Interestingly enough, the audio was “recorded with a wireless Sennheiser microphone onto a Marantz audio recorder and later synced in Final Cut Pro.” Talk about dealing with an extra work load!

I was first startled when I viewed the comments section. You can view it by “tree” or “web,” essentially a scatter plot of scalable comments, or a tree diagram. Having never experienced such an interactive forum for comments, I was initially frustrated by the layout. However, I realized that since comments aren’t essential information, maybe this was the best place to test out a new user interface. Now, the question is if it was worthwhile to program and design this interface for a non-critical piece of the presentation …

From the producers, “The comment system is build using Django and Flash AS3. The idea is to provide a visual representation that allows users to quickly see what are the highest rated and most discussed comments. Expect to see this comment implementation more in the future.”

Regardless, I appreciate the innovation and experimentation, both in terms of work flow and presentation.

If you enjoyed this project, make sure to check out “Innovation in News,” a gallery of exceptional multimedia from The Post and Slate.

Created by previous guest blogger Steven King and his “web ninjas” at The Washington Post, this gallery highlights the “next generation in online video, photo mosaics, interactive graphics and our next technological advances.”

People criticise the MarkII but I have to be honest – I was *mesmorised* by the colours in this: So rich and crisp.

As for the comments innovation..I liked it – “next generation” is definitely an apt phrase
