Introducing Honduras and the Hidden Hunger

I am extremely happy to announce that my Pulitzer project on malnutrition has officially launched. The print version will run in The Daily Tar Heel on Thursday, and all online components can be found at www.internationalhunger.com. Please check out my project and let me know what you think!

This has been an insane 24 hours as I had to make a last minute change to host the site on my server, therefore teaching myself enough about PHP and MySQL to add a comment form to the site. Note to self: do future projects in WordPress where comment functionality is already built in!

I will go into more detail about the project — the highs, the lows, the code, etc — tomorrow (once I get some sleep!) This was certainly a project worth remembering, as I was in my first political coup and learned how to work around daily, and sometimes hourly, power outages.

Bugs in my video equipment hampered the final video, which was extremely frustrating. But, I worked really hard on my first documentary bilingual audio slide show, and I am pretty happy overall with that piece. It was also my first long-form narrative, which was definitely a feat for a visual producer.

I owe a big thank you to everyone who helped me along the way, especially my mentors Laura Ruel, Don Wittekind and Seth Gitner. Former Poynter fellow Joey Kirk kindly designed the header treatment of the site. Most importantly, I owe this story to The Pulitzer Center, who supported my travels and worked with me from start to finish.

Tune in tomorrow for a behind-the-scenes look at “Honduras and the Hidden Hunger”!
