II posts now available in Spanish

I am happy to announce that II posts are now being manually translated into Spanish. This is an exciting time for II since visitors from Spain, Mexico, Argentina and Chile make up a large proportion of our international visitors. Visitors can now switch back and forth between English and Spanish versions of II posts, and comment in either language. University of Miami graduate student Andrea Ballocchi is now serving as II’s Spanish editor, and will monitor all Spanish conversation on the site. Please join me in welcoming her as II truly goes global.

Currently, visitors will see a language link at the top of posts (as viewed on the site … not in your RSS reader or email) if there is a translation available. Andrea has already translated all of last week’s posts, and is working on translating the archive of “Most Read” posts. Within the next few weeks, we will slowly be integrating a complete Spanish version of the site, with customized RSS feeds, bilingual plugins and more.

Andrea is a Chilean journalist. She studied video production at the Art Institute in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and worked as an assistant producer for Sábado Gigantes on channel 13 in Santiago, Chile, and as a producer at Anticipa, an internet company also in Chile.

In 2005, she participated in the multimedia project “The Ancient Way”, in Spain. Since then she has participated in several other projects, including “Chasing Crusoe,” “Atacama Stories,” “Special Olympics in Shanghai and Idaho,” “South of Here,” and “West Grove 2008.” She has also taught and coordinated projects at Universidad de los Andes, Chile.

Andrea Ballocchi is currently a multimedia journalism graduate student at the University of Miami, Fla. and works at The Knight Center for International Media.

  1. Nice! That’s great news for the site and I’m glad to hear that Andrea is the one on board.

Will there be one unified set of comments per post (translated both ways) or will they be separated by language?

    Traducción:
Estas son grandes noticias para el sitio y estoy feliz de que escuchar que es Andrea quien está a bordo.
Habrá un set unificado de comentarios por post (traducidos a cada idioma) o estarán separados por idioma?

  2. Basically, I just wanted to clarify this line for future posts: “Visitors can now switch back and forth between English and Spanish versions of II posts, and comment in either language.”

    Traducción:
Basicamente, quería clarificar esta frase para los futuros posts: “Ahora pueden cambiar rápidamente entre las versiones en inglés y español y comentar en cualquiera de los dos idiomas.”

  3. Great question, Greg. All reader comments are displayed on the same page, and both Andrea and I are notified of new comments. I will continue to respond to English comments. Andrea will respond to Spanish comments, as well as provide translations in order to create an effective, bilingual dialogue in the comments section. Hope that clears things up!

    Traducción:
Excelente pregunta Greg.

  7. Thanks everyone for the nice welcoming. I am very happy to be doing this, I hope this will help all the Spanish readers out there.

Gracias a todos por la calurosa bienvenida. Estoy muy feliz con esta nueva iniciativa, espero que ayudará a quienes prefieren leer en español.

Richard, peut être si ça marche bien avec l’espagnol on pourra faire le français!

(if the Spanish endeavor works, why not try French later!/ si la iniciativa en español funciona bien, tal vez después podremos intentar francés!)
