Multimedia producer Benjamin Chesterton has been quite busy over at Duckrabbit promoting a new site he contributed to titled, “A Developing Story.” Arguably best said in his words, this site serves to “create an open space on the web in which stories and images that explore the richness and complexity of an unequal world can find a home.” The newly founded non-profit will highlight the latest social advocacy work around the world, and they are currently looking for bloggers and contributors to help the site thrive!
For producers working behind the scenes, I would recommend bookmarking and/or subscribing to the corresponding blog. Posts concentrate on issues regarding international development and how it is being visually depicted around the world. For those who are just looking to be inspired, check out the stories highlighted on the homepage. The site is continually being updated with the latest multimedia stories covering everything from womens’ rights to climate change, and they are all excellent examples of exemplary storytelling.
Interested in contributing to this site? Benjamin said they are specifically looking for:
“1. people who can source materials for the front page.
2. writers for the blog (who have a specialism in the field of development).
3. a number of picture editors to run the big picture area of the site, where we will bring to the attention of NGO’s photographers from both sides of the unequal world.
4. professionals working in the field of development communications who can help us source and develop training materials.”
You can also submit personal work covering humanitarian issues to be featured on the site. This is a great way to simultaneously cross promote your work while helping to grow out the site. Read more about these opportunities to get involved on their “Join Us” page.
I also have to give them kudos for the beautiful site, built by John Bennett, a “freelance digital strategist” based in London.
Hi Tracy,
thanks for the kind words about the site.
I’m also a novelist (Random House) the other two co-founders Benjamin and Phil are both ex-BBC producers (Phil is now CEO of the Prison Radio Association), so I guess the reason we built the site is because we’re all interested in how stories can help with development work.
It’s interesting that in the last couple of months, several larger NGOs have indicated a desire to use new media content to help raise both awareness and funding, to help communicate with audiences in a more direct way than they have perhaps done in the past.

Hopefully the site can help bring this work to a wider audience, and help everyone involved in development work tell their stories better.
However, ultimately we’d also like to see these skills passed on, to build similar new media capacity in developing countries, to help strengthen governance, and therefore development, but that’s a little way off yet, for the moment it owuld be great if anyone could send us links to stories they think we should highlight.
Thanks again,
John
ES:
Hola Tracy,

Gracias nuevamente,
Thanks again,
John
