Innovative Individuals: Dai Sugano

Multimedia extraordinaire Dai Sugano came highly recommended for inclusion in the “Innovative Individuals” series. I first stumbled across his work awhile back when I was looking through all of the inspirational multimedia on MercuryNewsPhoto.com, which he helped create. After spending some time on his Web site to learn that he teaches multimedia at Stanford in addition to his role as Senior Multimedia Editor at San Jose Mercury News, I realized that he had earned this title long ago. Thus, I am excited to kick off the new year by featuring Dai Sugano as 2010′s first innovative individual.

Best of Innovative Interactivity, 2009

II had an exceptional year thanks to all of its loyal followers. Every time you comment, bookmark, retweet, or otherwise promote a post, it makes my heart a little happier. So thanks for making me a happy girl! The major highlight from 2009 was welcoming Andrea Ballocchi as Spanish Editor, who works hard behind the scenes translating each and every post and comment by hand so our Hispanic audience can feel more welcome. The major downside from 2009 was accidentally overwriting my database and frantically reaching out to my tech gurus to revive II. Alas, we are steadily growing and covering a wider variety of multimedia and for that I am thankful.

‘Best of the Post 2009′ a multimedia treasure trove

I recently stumbled across The Washington Post’s “Best of the Post 2009″ feature and thoroughly enjoyed looking through the 21 interactives, 35 videos, 17 photos, and 27 photo galleries that they highlighted. Obviously the Post staff was quite busy this past year, and they certainly have a lot to be proud of from the wealth of content showcased in their annual round-up.

Innovative Individuals: Juan Thomassie

I am honored to recognize Juan Thomassie, senior designer at USA Today, as this week’s “Innovative Individual” for his expertise in interactive data visualization and graphic design. I had the pleasure of attending a seminar that Juan taught when I was a Poynter fellow in 2007. As a budding Flash developer, I was extremely impressed by his extensive knowledge of actionscript programming. Ever since, I have enjoyed looking for his byline on innovative graphics at USA Today.

Top 50 multimedia sites of 2009

2009 brought countless inspirational Web sites, touching stories, and innovative ideas. Here is my “Top 50″ list of favorite multimedia sites from this year. Thanks for all of the inspiration and keep it up for 2010!

10 multimedia books for your holiday wish list

Although Christmas is right around the corner, there is still enough time to buy some last-minute presents … for yourself! Included here are 10 books that I have asked for this year. The graphics books were all highly recommended from former UNC graphics professor Alberto Cairo, and the multimedia books were meticulously chosen throughout the past year. I hope you can grab at least one of these books to invest in continued education during the new year!

Innovative Individuals: Meredith Birkett

Coincidentally, after I chose to feature Meredith Birkett, senior multimedia producer at MSNBC, for this week’s innovative individual, MediaStorm founder Brian Storm summed up my reasoning perfectly on her LinkedIn profile: “Meredith is one of the best in the business. She’s a constant champion of quality and a leading ambassador of multimedia storytelling.”

Adam Westbrook’s “10 trends in journalism in 2010″ video a must-see

British multimedia blogger Adam Westbrook just made my day with his entertaining and right-on predictions for journalism in 2010. For those in a rush, I included his 10 predictions here, but his video is really worth seeing in its entirety because he makes some excellent points regarding each prediction. Thanks for the inspiration Adam – it sounds like 2010 has a lot in store for new media journalists!

II founder Tracy Boyer to join UNC’s 2012 MBA class

You may have already seen my ecstatic tweets and Facebook updates, but I wanted to officially let everyone know that I was accepted into UNC’s prestigious MBA program. Continually ranked as one of the top 20 business schools in the nation, I will have the opportunity to craft a future business strategy for multimedia from top leaders in the field. I will finish my current master’s program a semester early, and join the 2010 entering class of business students next fall at Kenan-Flagler. In three years, and if all goes as planned, I will receive the first MSIS/MBA dual master’s degree given from Carolina.

Phil Daquila produces thesis, “The Improvisers”

2009 UNC master’s graduate Phil Daquila recently launched his thesis, “The Improvisers.” In it, he beautifully documents how people improvise in all aspects of life, from the extracurricular activities of dance and music, to the life-altering decisions made in our professions. Notice how all aspects of this site are carefully designed, from the typography in the videos to the site header. All together, there are seven videos documenting everything from firefighters improvising while putting out fires, to musicians improvising on stage.
