Multimedia Producer at The Roanoke Times in Roanoke, VA

The Roanoke Times is looking for a creative, curious, agile and energetic producer to help us pursue journalistic excellence on roanoke.com. We’re an award-winning site with an established reputation for multimedia storytelling and a vibrant environment of experimentation and invention.

As web producer, you’ll take the lead in developing new ways to engage our audience while making sure content and design meet the standards for quality journalism and web usability. You’ll help us maintain critical sections of roanoke.com. You’ll join us in looking ahead not to where technology and storytelling and information distribution are right now on the web, but where they could be in eight months, two years, or even ten.

You’ll be switching gears a lot: You’ll be producing stories one minute and working with the metro team on a breaking news story the next. You’ll be redesigning a section of the site one day and dreaming up a new way to tell an old story another. You’ll turn around the next and be asked to translate a story from print to online to mobile. You’ll find yourself at once a teacher, a translator, a storyteller and a project manager within the newsroom.

We’ll train you and give you the tools you need to succeed. But you’ll need to hit the ground running, too, and be willing to learn along the way. The strongest applicants demonstrate that they can learn on their feet and seek out new opportunities to teach themselves what they need to know.

That means you’ll need to come into the job with strong web skills (ideally, experience with HTML, CSS and Photoshop; a familiarity with site structure and content management systems; and at least a dabbling in different types of web production) and a strong sense of journalistic values (including, obviously, a serious grasp of ethics, journalism basics, commitment to our community, news sense, online decision-making, etc.).

What we require? Strong communication skills, an ability to multi-task and meet tight deadlines, a healthy respect for the place and its people, and a desire to embrace the possible. Infectious enthusiasm is a bonus.

If you’re interested in this position, apply online at jobs.roanoke.com. In addition, send us 3 to 5 links to the pieces that best demonstrate the breadth of your work online, along with a short description of your contribution to each. E-mail those links, along with your resume and a link to your online portfolio/presence to meg.martin@roanoke.com.
