Multimedia must-see: “Victims of gang violence” by LA Times

Perhaps you already have spent some time with “Victims of gang violence: The smoke clears, but pain endures” published by LA Times at the end of 2010.

I have been holding off on promoting this piece because I was anxious to do an interview with Barbara Davidson, the main producer behind this compelling piece. Unfortunately, she is overcoming a concussion suffered from a recent car accident (but she’s OK!) so I wanted to go ahead and publish the piece to make sure you check it out before 2011 stories bury it.

I was compelled why they chose to use black and white for everything and also why they brought in Chad A. Stevens as a story consultant. Students always receive this type of mentoring, but I have never known many professional storytellers to utilize consultants.

Twenty producers worked on different aspects of this story over what was undoubtedly several months of production.

I’m curious – did you watch the overarching story before diving into the individual stories or vice-versa? I wonder what the time spent on site was for this piece – there is nearly 30 minutes of video cut into eight sections with corresponding photo galleries for each. Talk about a ton of content!
