SND30 awards were announced yesterday, rewarding work done in 2008. I was particularly interested in seeing the Infographic winners, but unfortunately they did not provide links nor were they easy to find after intense search efforts. I was successful in finding 9 of the 41 winners, which I have listed along with the brains behind the work. These graphics are all innovative examples with beautiful designs. Congrats to all, and let me know if you can find the links to any of the other winners!
Barb Palser, director of digital media at McGraw-Hill Broadcasting, wrote a reflective article in this month’s edition of “American Journalism Review” on her experience judging the 2008 SNDies multimedia competition at UNC in August. Palser wrote, “In this contest alone, dozens of entries stood out for their design quality, user engagement, news value and appropriate choice of media for the information being conveyed.” I completely agree that we are seeing a high level of innovation in multimedia competitions across the board. So, why does this matter and how does it affect you?
NPPA announced their winners for January’s multimedia contest, and I was excited to see two projects listed that I had not previously seen. If you have some extra time, make sure to check out “The Rites of Life” by The News & Advance and “Testing grounds” by St. Pete Times : two nicely designed and thorough multimedia presentations.
MediaStorm’s entries kept judges busy talking at the SNDies 2008 multimedia competition. They have conquered the industry of beautiful storytelling, but they also need to concentrate on how to showcase these videos within larger multimedia sites to truly set them apart.
The Society for News Design multimedia competition finished it’s 2008 competition Saturday night by awarding 18 finalists. Further awards (gold, silver, bronze and/or award of excellence) will be announced at SND’s annual convention, this year in Las Vegas from Sept 7-9. I cannot divulge favorites now since I was a judge, but I will do [...]

The Online News Association released their finalists today for the 2008 Online Journalism Awards. Yes, this news is a bit old, but I am excited nonetheless! The Roanoke Times and Roanoke.com received APME’s Online Convergence award for the 40,000- to 150,000-circulation category for our in-depth coverage focusing on the challenges facing the region’s rapidly growing elderly population. Here are the comments from the judges: “In ‘Age of Uncertainty,’ The [...]
I am happy to announce that the Hellgate interactive that I led and produced here at The Roanoke Times garnered 2nd place for best multimedia package in the 2008 BOP awards! The judge’s comments were quite harsh, but I agree that overall a lot of multimedia packages could be more complete and it will help [...]
