Washington Post looking for Flash freelancer

Steven King, Editor of Innovations at The Washington Post, recently posted an appealing freelance job opportunity for all of the Flash developers out there. If your schedule is flexible enough to live in Arlington for three weeks, and you know AS2, this may be the dream job for you …

FlashTip: Updated tips on SWFAddress

Since October, I have been receiving at least one email a week on my deeplinking with SWFAddress tutorial. I thought that one in particular might be of use to others trying to master deeplinking, so I am posting it here with his approval.

Flash Tip: Migrating from AS2 to AS3

Actionscript 3.0 is fundamental to integrating more robust interactive applications into your Flash presentations. I have been putting it off for some time now (aren’t we all a bit resistant to change?), but today I took the giant leap and taught myself AS3. And, now I wish I would have done it sooner. Here are the major differences between AS2 and AS3 and what you need to know to start learning AS3 today.

Flash Tip: Detecting end of videos

I finally sat down today to watch “Remember Me,” a great multimedia project by Concord Monitor. Brent Foster of Visual Journalist posted the behind-the-scenes story, and I knew I wanted to spend quality time with it. As I ate lunch, I watched the presentation. The only problem was that nothing happened at the end of each of the six videos, disrupting my viewing experience as I had to manually start the next. For those who want to sit back and watch, it would have been nice to add a feature that detects the end of one video to immediately start the next. Here’s how to do it …

Flash Tip: URLs in XML

One of my first assignments here at The Roanoke Times was to create a package detailing Virginia Tech’s 2007 football season, with links to archival stories, photo galleries and videos. I knew I wanted to use XML, but I wasn’t sure how to put a URL link in XML and have it show up as a link in Flash. Why I bring this up is because a recent assignment made me go back to these files to familiarize myself with the code, so I wanted to share it with you all in case you ever get stumped.

Flash tip: SWF intercommunication

Have you ever had multiple swf’s load into a main .fla and wanted to “communicate” a command from one to the other? Intercommunication between .swfs can be tricky, but with a little bit of code, you’ll be on your way to creating a more clean and robust package.

Personal lesson to the advantages of object-oriented programming

OOP can be confusing at first (why all these class files anyways??) but, when done right, is extremely handy when it comes time to create templates to be customized at a later date. Here is a case-in-point to the benefits of object-oriented programming.

Flash tip: Tween Class

One of the advantages to using Flash CS3 is the ability to use the tween and transition manager class. This powerful class dictates how movieclips animate and function. For instance, if you are interested in adding an animation between photos in a gallery, check out the Transition Manager options. Highlights include the option to rotate, zoom, fade or wipe movieclips.Another subset to this class is the easing class.

Flash tip: Exploring Flash’s Date Class …

While creating one of the interactives for our Age of Uncertainty project, I got stumped trying to figure out how to ask an open-ended question such as “What day is it?” without having to update the answers daily. Once again, thank you Flash! I found the Date Class which allows you to detect the day, [...]

How to program the Mac-style navigation in Flash

For one of my interactives focusing on the Virginia Tech anniversary, we did a video montage of people from the Tech community. I didn’t want the design or functionality to overwhelm the content so I decided to try a new style of navigation, similar to that of the Mac dock. Surprisingly, if you have a [...]
