Perhaps you have already come across this video – it seems to be a quickly growing Internet sensation. The creative agency Conscious Minds created a stop motion video of a guy walking across America using a Canon EOS 5D Mark II and a “MacGyver-style” protractor designed in Photoshop. Over two weeks a crew of six traveled across America and took 2,770 still frames – all meticulously shot. What’s even cooler in my mind is that they created both a behind-the-scenes video as well as a google map charting their trek.
I am currently working on a multimedia site about the intrinsic connection between energy and water in America for UNC’s News21 project, and I have been perusing numerous water-related sites to get inspiration for my project. One site I came across was that of AVA Colorado Rafting Company whose site mimics the feel of a person rafting from a first-hand perspective. Furthermore, rather than utilizing a boring horizontal or vertical navigational bar, they built the navigation into a GPS phone as if you were navigating your way down the river. Very creative!
Today I continue perusing through the mounds of inspiration known as the Webby finalists by noting some exceptional work within the “Interactive Advertising” category. I hope you also get the time to slowly go through all of these sites – they are truly the best of the best!
2009 brought countless inspirational Web sites, touching stories, and innovative ideas. Here is my “Top 50″ list of favorite multimedia sites from this year. Thanks for all of the inspiration and keep it up for 2010!
Less than a year after Toyota wowed the interactive community with their “Why Not? Innovation Experience” site, they have launched “Beyond Cars,” a user-submitted interactive portal allowing their audience to discuss a “better tomorrow.” Their site provides a truly engaging experience as users move around a visually stimulating interface to read, watch, and view other people’s thoughts about our future.
Former colleague Seth Gitner sent me a link yesterday to “The Watch Avenue,” a Flash-based advertising site for watches. Although I have no interest in buying a watch, this site enveloped me as I explored around this 3D avenue – listening to digital tour guides, selecting from interactive menus and learning from my own curiosity. Users can “walk” in and out of 16 stores along the avenue, with completely different content and options behind each door.
I have two blogs for you to add to your blogroll: TechCrunch and VentureBeat. If you are interested in learning about Web applications, start-up ventures and internet technology, these two blogs are right up your alley.
Got Milk?’s online advertising campaign successfully combines creativity, innovation and interactivity, providing both entertainment for the user and inspiration for the interactive designers out there. Does this new model of advertising pay off?
