A friend recently emailed me for advice on how to get started learning about data visualization. After overwhelming him with a mega list of resources, I thought that it may also be helpful for some of you. Furthermore, I am currently taking an excellent course with Dr. Brad Hemminger this semester titled Information Visualization, and he has also provided countless resources for his students. Thus, I decided to combine portions of the two lists and publish them for the II community. While it is not an all-encompassing list, I would argue that it’s a great start for beginners trying to get their feet wet. Enjoy!
Although Christmas is right around the corner, there is still enough time to buy some last-minute presents … for yourself! Included here are 10 books that I have asked for this year. The graphics books were all highly recommended from former UNC graphics professor Alberto Cairo, and the multimedia books were meticulously chosen throughout the past year. I hope you can grab at least one of these books to invest in continued education during the new year!
In my quest to read everything related to multimedia and interactivity in preparation for my master’s thesis, I came across this excellent Q&A with UNC assistant professor Alberto Cairo titled, “Animated infographics and online storytelling: Words from the wise.” Although this interview was initially published in the Online Journalism Review in 2007, arguably all of his statements still hold true today. If you missed this article, make sure to read it now to get some great infographics inspiration from one of the best in the field.
UNC masters student Eileen Mignoni recently launched her thesis project and it is a definite must-see. Facing Deportation is a multimedia documentary site about families impacted by North Carolina’s immigration policies. By combining video, audio, photography and interactive graphics into a bilingual site, she successfully created a well-rounded and intimate portrait of these immigrants and their stories.
Ever since Sara Quinn taught me the importance of a good font, I have always been more conscious about the fonts I choose for my multimedia packages. For all you graphic artists and designers out there: Does finding this video humorous make me a nerd, or a budding designer?
National Geographic’s “Mapping memory in 3D” combines great 3D production with interactivity to simplify the complexity of the brain. It garnered an “Award of Excellence” at SNDies, and was certainly well-deserved!
