CNN launches interactive visualization of Iraq and Afghanistan casualties

Last week I stumbled across the CNN interactive “Home and Away: Iraq and Afghanistan War Casualties,” and I was impressed at their ability to parse the immense amount of data into an aesthetically-pleasing and personal presentation. I am always interested to see how organizations depict this issue since there have been several versions over the years, such as The New York Times’ “Faces of the Dead,” and USA Today’s “Deaths in Iraq: A look at the American lives lost.”

“CNN Challenge” tests users’ knowledge in immersive environment

In conjunction with CNN’s recent site redesign, they launched “CNN Challenge,” an interactive news quiz allowing users to test their knowledge and compete against others. Although small bugs still exist, I am overall impressed with the innovation and attention to detail that went into the production.

Why we should embrace citizen journalists

I understand the concern, but I never said nor think that journalists are being replaced by citizen journalists. We are trained to do our job professionally, with legit sources, ethical values and journalistic integrity. There will always be a place for journalists. However, I believe that instead of feeling threatened by citizen journalists, we should be embracing their eagerness to help tell the story, and facilitate this energy to produce exceptional packages.
