Company spotlight: Story4

To begin our weekly company spotlight series, I chose to feature Story4, a small multimedia company based in Felton, CA. A team of four (including previously featured Innovative Individual Richard Koci Hernandez) develops “videos and Web 2.0 content” primarily for foundations and non-profit organizations. With more than 70 years of combined professional experience, it is obvious that this quickly growing company is one to watch.

Introducing new series: “Company Spotlight”

Many times I find myself blogging about either work done by individuals or work done by journalistic organizations. But what about all of the innovative work done by countless multimedia producers at places such as creative design agencies, 3D production studios and philanthropic storytelling ventures, just to name a few? You have probably wondered about these companies after seeing their work nominated for a Webby. Or, perhaps you are curious to learn what other career opportunities are possible in this field outside of news organizations. In order to help answer some of these questions, I have decided to intersperse a new semi-monthly series called “Company Spotlight” within the Friday series on “Innovative Individuals.” Both series will now run twice a month, with a goal to introduce you to both individuals and companies that are considered to be the movers and shakers in our industry.

Innovative Individuals: Annabel Symington

Journalist Annabel Symington is definitely on the move! You read of her Guarani Project a couple of weeks ago and the success of joining with Kickstarter to fund the first phase of that project. Annabel had been preparing for the first leg of travel to South America for that project, when she was commissioned to cover the BP oil spill in two ways, by two publishers! The first assignment by The Truth Pursuit is a series of articles about the BP oil spill in the Gulf. Annabel’s writes the in-depth article; she specializes in classic long form feature writing, yet will also include powerful, brief live interviews such as with the local fisherman in the Gulf assisting with the BP cleanup. The woman interviewed asked to remain anonymous, but in a few words and images, the piece gave a stark message.

Interview with Ed Granger-Happ, innovative founder of NetHope

Ed Granger-Happ, founder and current Chairman of NetHope, spends each day providing dozens of the largest non-profits with cutting-edge technology so that they can, in turn, successfully connect with their respective networks. His job also entails partnering and collaborating with many tech companies who are promoting interactive capacities along with infrastructure support and linkages. I strongly believe that Ed is truly filling a niche in the interactive/IT “supply chain” in the world of development and relief!

Advice from Alberto Cairo on animated infographics

In my quest to read everything related to multimedia and interactivity in preparation for my master’s thesis, I came across this excellent Q&A with UNC assistant professor Alberto Cairo titled, “Animated infographics and online storytelling: Words from the wise.” Although this interview was initially published in the Online Journalism Review in 2007, arguably all of his statements still hold true today. If you missed this article, make sure to read it now to get some great infographics inspiration from one of the best in the field.
