Many times I struggle to comprehend the magnitude of an event, such as the flooding in Pakistan. News reports state that the flooding has affected one-fifth of the country – well, is that a lot or a little? In attempt to answer this question, Berg and BBC producers developed “Dimensions” to help users visualize the scale of major events. By overlaying the affected area in relation to my zip code, I can now see that the flooding stretches from Orlando, FL, to New York City, NY. Now that I can directly compare the size of the flooding to roughly U.S.’ east coast, I can say for certainty that flooding in one-fifth of Pakistan is a huge issue!
After blogging about VisualPin, a service that provides “moving map videos,” a reader notified me about Vidmap. Coined the “true Geo-Tagging for videos,” Vidmap allows users to feature videos side-by-side a google map that updates according to the location of the movie. Made especially for videos filmed across distances, these presentations are hosted on Vidmap’s site and can then be easily embedded into your site.
BBC launched an informative multimedia package titled “Mapping UK’s Teen Murder Toll” right before Christmas. I wasn’t in the mood to talk about death around the holidays, so I decided to put this project off until the new year. As we jump head first into January, I would now like to highlight BBC for their great use of data visualization in this latest project.
