You may be wondering how I am selecting companies to feature for our new series “Company Spotlight.” Well, I’ll let you in on a little secret: For the last six months I have been keeping track of every multimedia company I have come across on a massive Google Doc. While I will try to feature as many companies as possible, there is no way to conduct Q&A’s with all of them. Thus, I decided to publish a portion of my list for you to peruse on your own in case you are looking for an internship, a job, or sheer inspiration. Before you get discouraged by the lack of multimedia jobs in the online journalism sector, check out these companies to see if they are hiring.
“I don’t know if you can hear it in my voice, but I’m wiped.” It’s the Saturday after a complete redesign of his company’s website, and Brian Storm, executive producer and founder of MediaStorm, does indeed sound exhausted. If you know the unending energy of Storm, you’ll appreciate this admission. With seven full-time staff and an intern, this small Brooklyn New York based company spent the better part of a year quietly reinventing it’s web-based image. When considering that job was handled primarily by about half the staff, you start to get an idea of how immersive this experience must have been for those involved.
This month we highlight 20 new multimedia opportunities that we came across in our monthly perusal of job boards. Two are internships; one is part-time; the rest are full-time. And, just as a side note, Bean Interactive won this month with the most creative job ad, ending “If you made it this far and are thinking, ‘I am so perfect for this job they might as well have called it “[YOUR NAME HERE]’s New Job” in the listing,’ then we want to hear from you.” Love it!
I normally try not to regurgitate content on II that you can easily find in your Google Reader. However, it seems like this month has been FILLED with inspirational multimedia talks and high-quality blog posts. I just got back from another great talk by National Geographic photographer and Fulbright Scholar Geoffrey Hiller. While the majority of you can’t partake in the local talks at UNC, you can still take advantage of all of the digital inspiration floating around the Web lately. Here is my Top-10 list of must-reads from the month. Enjoy!
Brian Storm, founder and president of MediaStorm, came to UNC today to speak to multimedia students about the importance of visual storytelling. I also had the opportunity to speak with him over lunch, and it was rejuvenating to hear him talk about his successful multimedia venture and his thoughts about the future of journalism. Below is a recap of his talk during UNC’s Photo Night.
Some of the most talented multimedia producers in our industry today actually started their careers as photographers. Photographers make up the majority of staffs at nearly every inspirational multimedia company – Media Storm, Bombay Flying Club, Talking Eyes Media, Weyo, and Story4, to name a few. Whether out of necessity or personal aspiration, these photographers have successfully made the transition to multimedia production and now use their still cameras as only one storytelling option. So why did they do it, how were they successful, and how can you follow their lead?
Happy New Year everyone! If you are like me, you came back from the holidays five pounds heavier and well rested. However, after glimpsing at your overflowing RSS reader, you might also be a bit overwhelmed. When Google Reader says “1000+” new items (which was my case), you know you’re in trouble! Thus, while cleaning out my reader, I decided to share my favorite posts with you over the last three weeks that you may have missed. Furthermore, please share any great finds that I may have missed so I can start 2010 all caught up!
I’m pretty sure I don’t have to introduce you to Eric Maierson, multimedia producer at MediaStorm and this week’s Innovative Individual. I’m also pretty sure I can speak for a lot of us when I say that Eric’s work is inspirational, to say the least. And it’s not just his work – all of the advice he happily provides on MediaStorm’s blog and his personal site is an invaluable resource for budding multimedia producers.
It’s that time of year again! Get out your 2010 calendars and make sure you sign up for one or more training sessions as a part of your continued education. I have highlighted 15 here that I highly recommend, as well as provided a list of training sites for you to bookmark for future reference.
Are you in the blues from all of this bad news lately? Today has been a day full of pleasant surprises for me, with links to free tutorials, blog entries full of invaluable advice, and even a new multimedia company on the horizon! Dig into all of this great stuff and feel the excitement … there are good times ahead of us, folks!
