Last week I stumbled across the CNN interactive “Home and Away: Iraq and Afghanistan War Casualties,” and I was impressed at their ability to parse the immense amount of data into an aesthetically-pleasing and personal presentation. I am always interested to see how organizations depict this issue since there have been several versions over the years, such as The New York Times’ “Faces of the Dead,” and USA Today’s “Deaths in Iraq: A look at the American lives lost.”
Get ready to spend a good amount of time with Denver Posts’ latest piece, “Ian Fisher – American Soldier.” The producers spent more than two years documenting the enlistment, deployment, and arrival home of Colorado native Ian Fisher. You can tell that a talented group of journalists worked around the clock on this intimate portrayal, and nicely timed it to launch on the eighth anniversary of 9/11.
I want to open up discussion about AP’s latest package, “Killer Blue, Baptized by Fire.” This four-part series documents the lives of soldiers in Blue Platoon, who served in Mosul, al-Qaida’s last urban stronghold. Coincidentally, I featured another AP package in the first round table discussion, but it failed to spark conversation amongst II readers. Hopefully the same thing won’t happen this time around. Personally, I was extremely emotional after watching this story, and I am eager to hear how others reacted.
